Ottawa Centre Refugee Action (OCRA) Fundraiser for Afghan Families
Ottawa Centre Refugee Action (OCRA) is running a pint and ice cream cone fundraiser, culminating with a visit by The Merry Dairy soft serve truck to Carleton Dominion-Chalmers Centre (CDCC) on September 18th beginning at 2pm.
$2 from each pint is also being donated to our fundraising effort for pints ordered from this page - pints that can be picked up at our shop at 102 Fairmont, delivered at home, or picked up at the truck at CDCC on September 18.
That amount will then be multipied by individuals who are pledging up to $3 per pint and cone sold to amplify the value of your donation!. Want to be a pledge leader? Email: email@example.com or click here. Want to donate separately to OCRA? Donate here.
Then come to Carleton Domininon Chalmers Centre on September 18th 2pm-5pm if you can!
How does the fundraiser work?
The first part consists of a portion of each product sold from this custom store supports these family settling in Ottawa. Credit processing and other financial fees are being waived, so 100% of all contributions will go to the family in need.
The second part of this fundraiser consists of the donation of a portion of each cone sold during the Merry Dairy truck's visit on September 18. To participate in this part of the fundraiser, you can just show up at the park and buy ice cream cones directly from the truck. No pre-ordering necessary for this part.
Our goal is to raise $18,000. To do that, we will need more than cones and pints. We are also asking for an optional pledge ranging from $3 to 25 cents per pint and cone. Those amounts will not be charged in your order but iIf you choose to commit to a pledge, your information will be forwarded to Ottawa Centre Refugee, who will reach out to you to complete your tax-deductible donation. Ottawa Centre Refugee Action is a community-based group of volunteers that sponsors and helps refugees settle in Ottawa, Canada. We have been actively sponsoring and settling refugees and reuniting families torn apart by war or fleeing persecution since December 2015.
To date, we have helped settle 22 families and individuals — 68 people in total, ranging in age from from 75 years to 18 months.
Since our inception, OCRA has raised more than $550,000, all of which has been used to fund refugee settlement or been committed for pending sponsorships. Our operations and administration are carried out entirely by volunteers.
As of mid-2022, we are proceeding with sponsorship applications for an additional 4 families/individuals. These applications await processing by the Canadian government. In addition, we have submitted 4 sponsorship applications to the United Church of Canada which await submission to the Canadian government.
In 2022, we also became involved in sponsoring refugees from Afghanistan.
While we work within the government’s current refugee process, we believe that Canada should have a system for accepting refugees that is more accessible, more efficient and more transparent.
